New extreme sport concept: flue shots

Free flue shots Saturday in Osceola -- OrlandoSentinel.com

It's bizarre how many ways you can get ideas for new business concepts and new products. I got one recently from a misspelled word in a headline.

I saw this headline that inspired something I thought would be a great idea: Free flue shots. Now, it was spelled "flue" - that's the opening up through the middle of a chimney. So I thought, "what a great idea for an extreme sport!" The whole bungee jumping thing seems to have taken its course, and those people are going to need something else to risk their lives with. Why not fire them up the middle of a chimney? Y'know, like Santa Claus, except you can skip the red suit and bag of toys - in fact, I'd recommend a helmet and knee pads, because I plan to use a rocket-fired sled bracketed to the inside of the flue.

You could inspire interest in the new sport by offering it for free: Free flue shots! You could post notices all over town, coordinate with health-oriented groups. I already had one doctor tell me he thought it was a great idea to offer them for free. He tried to tell me it's been done before, but I assured him it hadn't been.

The actual article had the correct spelling, so the writer knew how to spell the shortened version of influenza. Their editor, apparently, didn't know how to spell it, for the headline. I guess that says a lot about today's media, doesn't it? The people writing the headlines, presumably writers, can't spell "flu" properly, then how can we expect much from them otherwise?

Bless their hearts.
