MoveOn Proud: "Our New Ad"

MoveOn.org was initially a curiosity to me, in this past year or so. Then came the Gen. Petraeus ("... or General Betray Us?") ad. Was it a joke, I wondered first, then I realized it was not. And yet, it was.

[Note that this is a color-coded rant.]

I still receive email updates from this group that uses polls to propose speaking for a majority. But if one chooses to speak for a majority, I think it would be better to INFORM the majority of what the follow-through of one's messages is. MoveOn.org is pretty sloppy about that.

MoveOn.org is glib, plain and simple. In the following, they claim McCain would RATHER spend billions in Iraq than in the U.S. Glib and downright wrong. McCain plainly would not rather spend money on war than here. But, MoveOn.org seems to believe that McCain hates you, hates the poor, hates all liberals, hates peace, and might just well be from the legions of Satan.

They say, quite plainly, below in the email, that electing McCain would mean we would "end up stuck in Iraq." Funny comment coming from MoveOn.org, since this is a group that supported John Kerry, who famously slammed those "stuck" in Iraq. Surely you recall Kerry implying to a young crowd that if one did not get a good education one would wind up "stuck in Iraq." As if there could not possibly be anyone in Iraq with an education. Dumb comment, yet here is the "progressive" MoveOn.org utilizing the same phrase years later. Careless liberals just can't get the glibly crude phrases out of their message, can they?

Begin forwarded message:

Dear MoveOn member,

John McCain's chances of winning the White House get better every day.

He's defining himself as a maverick and he's burying the truth—that he'd continue President Bush's policies in nearly every important issue, especially the war in Iraq.

Tomorrow, we have a huge opportunity to set the record straight. It's the fifth anniversary of Bush's infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech. There's no better time to remind the public that, as McCain himself said, "no one has supported President Bush on Iraq more" than he has.

Our new rapid-response ad hits this point. And if we get it on the air, we can get the media talking about how 4 more years of Bush policy on Iraq would be a disaster for our nation.

We'll need to put together $200,000 to do it. Can you chip in $25? Click below to watch the ad and contribute:

With all the attention on the Democratic primary, John McCain has gotten a free ride from the media. If this keeps up there's a good chance he could sail into the White House and we'll end up stuck in Iraq indefinitely.

That's why it's so critical to start publicly fighting McCain's spin, starting with Iraq. We're aiming to run this ad nationally on cable, plus in a few states like New Mexico and Iowa—-where McCain has his campaign ads on the air, and but no one is countering them.

We have to act now to make sure voters know that John McCain would mean 4 more years of Bush policies in Iraq. Consider these key facts.

  • John McCain recently said, "No one has supported President Bush on Iraq more than I have." He was Bush's strongest ally in the march to war in Iraq. McCain consistently repeated the same misjudgments made by Vice President Cheney, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, and President Bush. More than 4,000 American troops have lost their lives because of these misjudgments.
  • McCain says we could be in Iraq for 100 years, and has consistently opposed any plan to withdraw troops from Iraq. He'd rather dump billions more in Iraq than invest it in our economy back home.
  • McCain accuses folks who want to bring our troops home of "surrender."

This election is our best chance to finally start bringing our troops home from Iraq—but we can't get there until someone takes on McCain on his war policy. Please chip in today.

Thanks for all you do.

If we leave Iraq, it is not -- or should not be -- to avoid being "stuck" there. I guess we were stuck in Japan and Germany since WW II, and in South Korea, too. We went into Iraq with an intent that was not out of the self-serving ignorance of destabilizing a country with leadership we didn't like.

If we leave Iraq in 2009, we will be leaving for no other reasons than self-serving, ignorant ones. This is one reason why Barack Obama is recently such a huge disappointment to me.

Obama's vigor without experience, his lack of skill as a true leader of top-class character, is becoming more and more obvious. The U.S. president must think far ahead of, and outside of, the here and now. Obama's inability to do so, especially in foreign relations matters, shines brightly in the light of such foolish proclamations as his intent of getting out of Iraq immediately.

But let's be honest: this fast exit would not happen, and Obama can blame it on circumstances -- there is no reasonable way to exit Iraq quickly, it just appeals to short-sighted voters. It is amateurish, or it is just plain cowardice for him to use a ploy of leaving Iraq in a rush to win votes. Anyone ought to know the prospect would not only be impossible, but in America it would prove to be political suicide. What we need is a better plan for Iraq, for ourselves and for the Iraqis, not an exit plan.
